Wall has become a leader on and off the court.

Patrick Patterson was not surprised that freshman John Wall handled himself so well during the NCAA check into his eligibility and was a perfect teammate for Monday’s exhibition game even though he could not play.

“He was just a cheerleader cheering his teammates on. He was being helpful and providing leadership from the bench. He was talking to us in the huddle being the leader he is and trying to tell us what to do and trying to get us more motivated. He was just cheering. He is a great cheerleader and teammate,” Patterson said.

None of that surprised Patterson.

“It is the same thing I learned when I first met him. He is cool, calm and collected. He knows he can’t play and he’s fine with that. He is here to support his teammates and also being a leader even when he’s not on the court. He is handling everything like a true man would do,” Patterson said.

Anything he can’t do?

“He’s not good at chess,” Patterson said. “Actually, he doesn’t play chess is why he’s not good, but I think he would be good at anything he does.

Patterson says Wall’s attitude has been important for the team.

“John has carried himself extremely well. He doesn’t let the hype or all the fame and pressure get to his head. Everyone knows who he is around campus and the Big Blue Nation knows who John Wall is,” Patterson said.
