Hesitate to post but reported on CP that former Cat great Mike Casey was removed from life support and has died.

I am so sorry to hear this. I have known Mike for many years and in fact, it was he who gave me paperweight replicas of the 1996 and 1998 Championship rings. He would have been one of UKs greatest players if he had not been involved in the auto accident in the summer between two of his years at UK.

My condolences to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of Casey's death. He was one of the all time greats at UK and I'm sure a great person in real life, as bayer has already testified. May God bless him and comfort his family.

What year was it that he took down a great Hazard High School team with Shelby County? I'm thinking it was 1965. I think it was in the semi-finals for the Ky. state tourney championship. It may have been the finals, though. Wonder if SCWC or bayer remembers? IOW, he was an outstanding high school player, as well.

I saw Mike Casey get three rebounds in a row, he stuck with the ball until it went in. Each rebound was in sucession and he sprang up for each of them. BamaCat, I also thought about him
joining Adolph up there, he has another one of "his boys" now. #34 you will be missed, I know you were very close to Mike Pratt and Dan Issel. May God Bless and comfort your family.

I may be wrong...but I think the Hazard High School team that Casey practically beat on his own was the number one ranked high school team in America at the time that Casey and Shelby County beat them. Jim Rose was on that Hazard team, I think...along with Chester Hogg and Freddie Hogg. {{{NO RELATION to Boss Hogg of Hazard}}} [Wink]

Think it was the 1966 State Tournament.

1966? I agree. Thanks, bayer. I couldn't remember which year but I knew it was '65 or '66. I had an older brother in med school at UK at the time and I can vaguely remember listening to the game with him in his dorm and hearing about Hazard losing to Shelby County. I wish I had Casey's stats for the game. He was awesome, though.

I'm very sorry to hear of Mike Casey's passing. He was one of my all time favorite UK players. A real go-to guy that, in our UK language, really "went to war" when things got tight.
God rest your soul, Mike.

Cattracker, I was at that game and Casey was just unstoppable. I think he played every position during that game. His play seemed to demoralize their opponents(Male I believe). I knew Mike when he was just eight or nine years old when he and his dad would come to my dad's store in Clark Station which was near their home. I think he was a better UK player than many remember.

I remember when Casey, Issel and Pratt were sophmores and at that time I thought Casey was the best of the three. He broke his leg and was never the same. I think Issel would have surpassed him anyway, but he was a heck of a player before the accident. Was never the same afterwards. He was one of my all time favorite Cats.

Thanks, Clyde...but do you remember if Casey and Shelby County played Hazard in the semi-finals---because going from memory, and I was just a youngen, HAZARD was the team to beat that year as they were the favorites by far. I am from Hazard is the reason I ask and I'm pretty sure Hazard was the number one ranked team in the country at the time of their loss to Casey and S. County.

Boy this is all exciting, BUT IT WAS BEFORE MY TIME!!!

IT makes you guys sound so OLD!! JK

I actually love listening to stories of past B-ball greats and what they did and accomplished. I really loved Cawood telling his story!!

Hard to believe he's been gone as long as he has now!! (Cawood, that is)

Cattracker, I just don't remember who Shelby County played in the semi's. I remember that Hazard had a player named Jim Rose who was a great high school player but I don't remember if it was the same year. It seems he played with some players named Hogg.
My father-in-law had been a high school coach and he always got us good tickets to the tournament for many years and a lot of those games just seem to "run together"

Clyde..thanks again. I've emailed an older brother who is an expert on basketball history. I'll find out soon enough. I KNOW it was Hazard as I remember listening to the part of the game when Shelby County and Casey put it on us....but I'm not real sure if Hazard was ranked number 1 in the NATION at this time or if it was another time.

Jim Rose joined Jim McDaniels at WKU, btw. When I was about 10 years old, I saw Jim Rose get 50 one night in Hazard.
