I thought about our coaching search over the weekend and came to a realization. It's definetly not a guarantee that we will get Donovan or another big name coach at this point. I do think that as long as we hire an intelligent, motivated coach that he will be able to recruit and win games at KY. Billy D will obviously get us well much quicker than anyone else, but I don't think we'll fall off the map if we don't get him. We may have a down year or two, but we'll be back as long as we hire a good coach, not necessarily a name. For example, see Thad Matta, Pitino at UK before, etc.

I guess what I'm getting at is I see a lot of people feeling like it's Donovan or bust, but UK can make a coach great if we give him a chance.

Really, the more I think about it, I could be very happy with John Pelphrey as our coach. He's played under Pitino, coached six seasons under Donovan, has had success as a D-1 coach, and is Kentucky proud.

Hiring Pelphrey in my opinion is like Florida hiring Billy ten years ago. I think ultimately we'd have the same results.

I admire your optimism, catlogic15, and your pride in Pelphrey. However we already have ample evidence what happens when a coach is overwhelmed by the UK program. IMO, we'd be doing the University and Pelphrey a disservice by putting him in the position at this point in his career. Comparing UF's program 10 years ago to UK's today is even more at odds with reality than comparing oranges to apples (maybe oranges to orangutans).

I believe that if a player can live under the microscope of UK basketball for four years and come out with shining colors, then go on to be mentored by a great coach as well as succeed at a certain level as a head coach, we should not dismiss him so easily.

I think Pelphrey would not fold under the program that is the University of Kentucky. He knows it just as much as anyone around. I for one am in the camp of giving the reigns to someone formerly connected to the program; be that Donovan, Pelphrey, or Ford.
