As everyone who reads these posts knows I am not a fan of Coach Smith as the UK BB coach. But tonight's call-in show provided me the first opportunity to question his, for lack of a better word, character. For those who missed it the 60-minute show, which has about 10 minutes of commercials leaving 50 minutes of content, had only 4 callers. The rest of the time was taken by ex-UK players calling in to express their support: Cameron Mills, Jeff Shepherd, Scott Padgett and Kenny Walker (who didn't even play for Smith). The whole exercise was a thinly veiled attempt to restrict the number of negative calls and, in my estimation, not in the best interest of the program. Answers to the 4 listener call-ins were as you would expect: recognize the problem, practice and plan for situations but players just don't execute, we're young you know, no leadership, etc., etc., ad nauseum. I can't say that Coach Smith was a part of the charade but his complicity is a bad sign.

prophet, Remember last year Tubby said that he was going to make some big time changes like getting a new strength coach and improving the recruiting area. Obviously nothing isn't working. Heck I see it right now that next years class is going to be a bunch of projects and uncoordinated players again. I'm tired of it actually. There are mid-majors getting better talent than us and we are paying this guy 2 million a year for this slop.

Wrong, its closer to 2 1/2 million a year.
And tonight I lost a ton of respect for him over
his "stonewalling" talk show antics.
Actually Prophet he took only TWO calls from fans
and the first one was a Tubby "praiser" whom Tubby
"warmly" thanked. The second caller wanted to know
about the three shot clock violations during the Vandy game.
There was no mention of the Barnhart announcement
made earlier during the day about Tubby's status.
Cats pause hotline came on after Tubby and said
Tubby's sponsors pay around $200,000 per year for
fans to call in the show each week and voice their
opinions to the coach.
They said it was clearly an attempt to sheild
Tubby from irate fans wanting to ask Tubby questions he did not want to answer.
They added that it may backfire and have the
opposite effect of causing the fans to become
more irate with Smith and the way he is handling
the program.
I am sure the Courier-Journal will have something to say about this in Tuesdays edition.
whas sports call at 8pm was filled with one
UK fan after another spilling their hearts out
with their thoughts on Tubby.
Speculation arose about the next coach. The
host Locklin McClain said he would give Tubby
one more year to straighten his act out.
He also suggested a new coach should be hired
for four years with the "condition" that he make
a final four trip during the length of the contract.
Smith is in deeper trouble tonight then at any
time during his ten year career at Kentucky.
In Barnhart's statement he said he wanted UK to
be more successful and win championships. And he added he too was not happy with the way things
are going and that after the season ends he would
make a determination as to the direction the program needs to take.
Tubby's attitude blasting the players after the
Vandy loss was just the tip of the iceberg of
the smoldering cauldron that is beginning to boil
within the Kentucky basketball program.

Actually, I am listening to a local talk radio show and they said that it was only two callers.
One caller was pretty much kissing Tubby's butt and the other one questioned a lot about the offense in the second half and wanted to know why there were so many shot-clock violations.
I think Tubby's response cited the location of the shot clock in Vandy's arena.

So you are saying that someone pays Coach Smith $200,000 to listen to people call in and belittle his program, and he has to sit there and defend it ???
Why would anyone do that ???

i don't know what kind of business you are in but in mine we must be responsive to the customer and often listen to things we might grow very tired of hearing. and in fairness we promise things and hopefully we follow through or we might not be working for the customer anymore. and if our productivity goes down, we may get fired. and we should be.
pay me 200,000 dollars for one hour a week for sixteen weeks and you can call in and talk about how ugly i am, how stupid i can be and how bad i smell.

Sounds like the beginning of the end for OTS. It can't come soon enough for this Cat fan!!
