Oklahoma State power forward Tyrek Coger, a JUCO transfer from Wilmington (N.C.) Cape Fear Community College, passed away Thursday evening, the school has announced. He was 21.
According to a school press release, Coger was transported to Stillwater Medical Center after collapsing during a team workout on Thursday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m.
Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood released a statement regarding Coger's passing:
"Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy. Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through," said Underwood.
The 6-foot-10, 240-pound Coger, who arrived on campus earlier this month, was ranked as the nation's No. 21 overall JUCO prospect and No. 3 center in the 2016 class, according to 247Sports.
