Kentucky sophomore guard Ashton Hagans has been named one of four finalists for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award.
In an official announcement made this morning, Hagans was joined by Kansas’ Marcus Garrett, Duke’s Tre Jones, and Baylor’s Mark Vital as the remaining contenders for the prestigious honor.
The winner will be announced April 1 by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, with a ceremony coming at a later day.
Last season, Hagans made it to the semifinalist round, but missed the final cut in his 2019 SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year campaign.
Hagans, a 2020 Southeastern Conference All-Defensive performer and the 2019 SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, made it to the semifinalist round of cuts last season but did not make the list of finalists during his freshman season.
Following up his team-high 58 steals in 2019-20, the Kentucky sophomore has now totaled 119 steals in 67 career game for an average of 1.776 steals per game for his career. That rate is third all-time in program history, trailing only Rajon Rondo and Derek Anderson.

Wow. I didn't realize that Derek Anderson was such a 'thief'. He always struck me as being the better player between him and Ron Mercer.
Anderson is definitely one of my favorite "unsung hero" Cats!
