Mama has lung cancer, we just found out yesterday.

The CT scan showed a mass in her lower left lung, it measured 2.7mm x 1.7mm x 1.7mm. It doesn't appear like it has spread to the lymph nodes, hopefully.

She is scheduled for a PET scan tomorrow and we go back Monday for the final diagnosis and treatment options.

Any prayers for her would be welcomed and appreciated.

Oh dear God! Of course I will be praying for "mama". A name would help me focus my prayers.

Take good care of Moma, but don't forget to take care of yourself as well. You will be vital in her journey back to health. You won't do her any good if you get sick too!

Sorry, cmd, I wasn't clear...Mama is my lovely wife...Suzy.

Dr. Clyde...I like that name...you done good hc.

We live on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa in the more rural area...about 25 minutes away.

She is 73 and otherwise she is in great health. Only takes meds for acid reflux. She did smoke for many years but not in the last 18.

She came down with bronchitis and pneumonia in January and was really sick (very unusual for her). She recovered from everything except the cough...it lingered on and on.

About 2 weeks ago she went for an x-ray and it kinda went from there...one test led to another.

MM, my mom got lung cancer at age 69 and beat it, so just stay as positive as you can. It's good news that it isn't in the lymph nodes - maybe they caught this early which is very good towards beating cancer. You and Suzy have my prayers.

So sorry to hear this MM. My wife and I pray a rosary every day for a lot of people. Suzy will be included in it from now on.

I am also praying for her daily.

Is your wife a Kentucky mountain woman?

Posted by MountainMafia (Member # 2066) on 05-02-2020, 03:17 PM:

No, Dr Clyde, she's not a mountain woman, but she is the cream of the crop from Alabama. [Smile]

Posted by ukcatfannfl (Member # 1425) on 05-02-2020, 03:21 PM:

That's funny MM as my wife is from Ala. They must know each other as only a few women anywhere are the cream of the crop as ours are! [Wink]

You got that right, Ed. [Smile]

Suzy truly is the love of my life. I'm sure everyone on here feels the way about their wife...I don't know where my sorry ass would be today if not for her.

BTW, I told her about all the nice things you guys were saying. She said: "I thought those guys didn't like you"? I replied: "They're not praying for me"! We both had a big laugh. She really does appreciate it guys...as do I.

A real conservative would own the establishment and give him the first drink free in hopes he'd bring all his friends to buy drinks! Capitalism at work!

Clydeh, I was a sales Rep for a number of companies that supplied General Electric in Louisville. My partner handled Cullman products and we sold a ton of aluminum parts to GE through the years. Cullman was a great company and wondered if they are still the company they were 20 years ago.

Cat, I had several patients who worked for Cullman Products years ago and it was a good employer here. I think another company bought them and I'm not sure their name.

Update:

The PET scan results were good, I think and hope.

It showed a place in her groin but don't believe it is malignant, otherwise the tumor seems to be local and nowhere else.

Next is to schedule a biopsy with a pulmonologist. This will tell what type of cancer and what stage.

Thanks guys, y'all been great!

Thanks for the prayers guys, they're paying off.

Biospy said the cancer is non-small cell and slow growing, which is good news.

That means that surgery is a possible option and maybe a "cure", but it may require the removal of one lung because of the location of the tumor, directly in the main bronchial tube of that lung...we thought it was lower down in one lung for some reason?

Don't know yet if radio-chemo is an option and maybe save the lung...probably a lot we don't know yet.

So far, about as good as we could hope for.

Edit:

Mama says thanks too.

Encouraging news! One of my best friends had lung cancer about 12 years back. I’m pretty sure it also was small cell. He's doing great and mean as ever! I’m sure Susie will also. I know it’s tough times for you, your wife and entire family. I continue to pray for you all.

M.M.
The treatment is so much improved compared to my earlier years. Technology has made such a difference. Testing is more reliable and safer.
Your situation is not funny, but I do have a true funny story.
I had a patient with abdominal pain that I could not diagnose and I sent her to a gastroenterologist. He ordered a CT scan. Only minor problems were found.
When she came back to see me, she said "I hate those CT scans and do not want to ever have another one. They put me on that hard table and rolled me into that dark tube. I have claustrophbia plus all the noise that thing made frightened me even more.
I said, "When I was a young doctor, we didn't do those tests. We did exploratory laparotomies". She asked me what they were and when I told her, she said "I'd rather have a CT scan!!

I'm not normally up here on the site but the title of the thread got my attention. Sorry to hear about your wife's problem but glad you found out it is not near as bad as it could be. Hope all goes well in the treatment and we are praying for her. My wife and I are getting ready to celebrate 56 years in about 23 days. We were married in a small Baptist church in Madison Co. between Berea and Richmond in June 1964 just after I reenlisted in the Air Force so I would have enough money to buy me a suit to get married in. Old Norm,
Thank you for your service. I want to thank all of you guys who served our country in the military. I did not serve in the military. I was afraid of going to Vietnam and joined the USPHS in 1966.

M.M., I certainly pray for you and your wife every day. I pray for many of my friends who are much younger than me who have major medical problems and are disabled worse than me.

So true, cc, so true.

We all know that our little debates mean nothing in the end. They don't put food on our tables, pay our bills, protect us from harm and certainly don't change anyone's mind, and they usually wind up right where they started. On top of that, the people we are fussing about could not care less.

It's the people in our lives we love, and love us, that matter. They keep us grounded, give us strength, hope, the will and determination to overcome adversity.

As you said, with God's help nothing is impossible.
