I'm sad tonight. I just had to have my dog Rusty put to sleep. He ran under my wife's car as she was pulling into her parking spot.
I thought when it came time to put him out of his misery that I could shoot him, but I couldn't. He was 17 years old. I'm going to miss my old friend.

One of the worse feelings ever is having to put your dog down. My heart goes out to you, RLT.

I feel for you, rlt4uk...it's really hard to lose a loved one.

I have a female Beagle (Gypsy) that I love like a child...she is 16...wish she wasn't.

Family pets aren't just animals, they are family members. We had one die on Christmas day, five years ago. It was devastating.

Sad to hear RLK, as others have said they become family.

I had my second of 2 pet birds pass last month. Had to have him put down, the other died in his cage. They passed 366 days apart and I had them 17 and 20 years each. I still get tears in my eyes from time to time, even a month after.

I think over time we become their pets, and they become our masters, I know that is how I felt.

Had to have three dogs put down over my adult life. Only one of them happened in my presence -- the most recent one. I have decided that I cannot bear to do that again, so the dog I have currently will be my last.

The pain and sorrow are great. I feel for you RLT.

Not only are they like family, but in most cases they become your best friend. Always happy to see you!

I'm real sorry, and to everyone here who's had to lose or put down a pet, I feel your pain. We had our last dog for only 8 years before lymphoma took her and we had to put her down. Read that poem 'The Rainbow Bridge' and sobbed like a schoolgirl. They definitely are like one of the family.

It's amazing how much you can love a pet.
