Now, they are closing plants, in favor of Mexican and other over seas production and they can't even get an even right in Detroit of all places.

One of the reasons they are closing plants is because they are no longer going to be producing the Sedans. I know the Cruise and some of the other cars are no longer going to be produced. Not moving to Mexico, just switching over to the crossovers like the Equinox and the Trax!

I would not even buy an AMerican made Chevy, the corporation has no ethics in my opinion and it will not bother me one bit if they end up going bankrupt because of these decisions. I hate to see Americans lose their jobs and this should not be allowed to happen with American corporations but there seems to be nothing that can be done to prevent these type of business decisions. Chevy would have been bankrupt had not the government stepped in and bailed them out some 12 years or so ago.

I owned ONLY GM cars growing up... a 1970 Pontiac Lemans, a 1976 Pontiac Sunbird, and my first "New" car, a 1989 Chevy Baretta.

That car was a complete lemon. It came with the "sport" package, which basically meant that the transmission, clutch, brakes, and suspension were German manufactured, and DAMN EXPENSIVE to fix. The first two months I owned it, it was in the shop for 6 weeks. TERRIBLE car. Fortunately, I totaled it in my one and only accident.

Since then, I owned two GM cars, both minivans when my kids were little, bought through the GM discount that my brother-in-law got for us. They were also TERRIBLE cars, always in the shop for something or the other. But other than those, I have owned two Hondas, one Saab, one BMW, and one Toyota. All of them were delightful cars to drive, and cheap to maintain. I will never buy another GM again. When my current 2007 Solara Sport convertible finally gives up the ghost, my next car will be a Tesla. [Smile]

I used to be a huge Ford fan, drove Lincoln's for some 20 years before switching to Toyota's some 12 years ago. No car better than the Toyota Avalon Limited in my opinion, I am now driving my 4th one and have never had to have anything done to any of them other than oil changes, filter changes etc. Nothing mechanical in 12 years. Never had a Chevy product and never will.

Toyota 6cyls had a history of blowing up. I do think Toyota makes the best 4 cyl on the market

For all the ballyhoo of how great a Benz is, their maintenance costs are through the roof.

Buy a new car and you lose 3 to 5K or more, as soon as you drive it off the lot. It is a good feeling to own a brand new car. But if you look at the economics of it, it makes no sense.

My Solara has a 6-cylinder, and it is as smooth as silk. I had not heard of issues with that engine.

I have no direct experience with Benz, but I am glad that we only kept the BMW for a few months and then sold it. That car was just an indulgence for my wife, and thankfully nothing major went wrong with it while she drove it. Parts and labor to fix Beemers will give a person a heart attack!

You are correct about the economics of buying new cars. I try to find good cars that are 4-6 years old. That is where the depreciation curve starts to level off a bit. But given my circumstances today (high cashflows out for college tuition for two kids), I am considering leasing a car for the first time ever.

Toyota fan here. Since 1988 I've owned 3 Celicas and now a Tundra. Wife has had a Paseo, 2 Camrys and now an Avalon.

And if i'm buying a car it will always be a new one. I will never buy used. I buy new because I plan on keeping a car for at least 15 years, and I want to know that it's being taken care of.
