“He’s probably our most skilled big man, shooting the ball, passing the ball, dribbling the ball,” Calipari said in the Bahamas. “Physically and mentally, that toughness that you need, he’s probably behind these other guys, but they’re veterans. They’ve been through the wars. He hasn’t.”

At 6-foot-10, 228 pounds, Montgomery lacks the bulk of Kentucky’s other post players.

But with Washington and Travis boasting similar skillsets and the ability to pound opponents into submission on the block, Montgomery seems like a logical choice to pair with either.

“Those guys are strong, chiseled players,” Daniels said. “He’s more long, lean and can run. I think his game complements those guys well. Obviously, Nick Richards is a different type of post. He’s more of an enforcer, strong, tough, physical shot-blocking type guy. I think EJ might be kind of a mixture of all of that.

“He’s got the ability to score on the block like a PJ. I think he can impact the game with protecting the rim and rebounding like a PJ and a Nick Richards. I think he moves up and down the floor as well as any of those guys.”

You can never have to many scorers.
