Box Score

I thought late game free throw shooting was going to cost us this game. We got lucky late. Still not a very good team in my opinion, like robots that have not had the basketball iq programmed into them as of yet. I am happy with the win as always but must admit, this is not the most fun team to watch that Cal has had at UK.

We actually held our own with them on the boards, getting 29 rebounds each, that in itself is quite a feat against this Texas A&M team who rank 2th nationally in rebounding.

Those two turnovers within the last minute, one by Alexander and one by Knox on double teams were almost too much for us but we prevailed and that is all that counts. No good basketball decisions late by our team.

This game has caused me to do some flipping on my thoughts. The one thing I am not flipping on is that I think the SEC is not that good. The only reason the SEC will get more than 5 teams in the tourney is if the other leagues continue playing poorly also. Most games are garbage games that are hard to watch. I now think we will lose more than 5 games. These guys will find it hard to get where they need to be by March. I am now against playing all these weak teams at the beginning of the year. We need to get early experience against some better teams. So what if we lose a few games. At least they will know they are not as great as they think they are playing against these poor teams early. What I can't figure out is why all these 5 star players are getting whupped by 4 and 3 star kids. If the SEC is so good like some say they are we may end up in the NIT again if we don't start thinking with our heads. Another thing is we were strapped for players tonight with only 2 subs. This is the shortest we've been since Cal got here. I hope Vanderbilt gets in gear pretty soon or he might as well red shirt or go pro.

Washington came up huge late in the game even though he only hit 50% of his ft's

Bama, I think college basketball as a whole is way down talent wise this year. All leagues are major upsets early in the conference schedules. I have watched a ton of games and from what I have watched, Villanova appear to be the cream of the crop this early in the season and we are almost half way through it. This team play ugly basketball, almost like they are robots that have not been properly programmed with basketball iq's. Alexander and Knox made two terrible turnovers within the last minute of the game that players are not supposed to make if they are the cream of the crop. This is just not a good shooting, good ball handling team and their free throws are going to bite them in the butt one of these nights when the game is close like it was tonight. I am not impressed with anyone on this team this year compared to last year's version of our Cats.

Alexander has become my favorite player on the team and he is the one 4 star player that gets any playing time.

I fear Cal has a group on his hands that
he is not going to be able to make into a solid basketball team by the end of this season. I just don't see any first round nba talent on this squad as of yet and that is a first for the Cal era.

We made 8 more free throws and were 6% better at the line.

Sixty four percent is not good free throw shooting. We were fortunate that they only shot 58 percent of theirs.

Cal is a heck of a good coach and wouldn't surprise if he has the Cats better by tournament time and they go a long ways it the tournament barring injuries.

I like that Cal is trying some different things, like the zone, but I just don't see a deep run in this team. I haven't seen the defensive effort necessary for a deep run, or the basketball IQ. I hope we can get there, but I have doubts right now. I also don't see that Mr ad er in this team that everyone can follow. That can hapoen, but we need it to happen soon.

That should be leader in this team

How true, Ukman. The only aggressive behavior I see from anyone on this team is when they just try to get their own shots off without playing team ball. I think one of the guards has to step up and try to be that leader.

And speaking of basketball IQ, what kills me is when players need a coach to tell you to rebound, or go after a loose ball, or try and guard your man. This is basketball 101, but it seems like each year there are players that need to be taught these things. I don't get it.

It is a bit strange since Cal has had this team for months and some of the mistakes like you say are still happening. One thing that hurts our team every year is that we have so many players going to the NBA after their freshmen year.

I think the biggest problem right now is, they just cannot, or do not, stop the pick and roll, nor the guy coming to the rim from the corner to receive a pass and dunk.
