Mark Stoops didn't grow up idolizing No. 22. He wasn't in the stands for any of Jared Lorenzen's 78 touchdown passes. He wasn't glued to his television marveling at how Lorenzen had just escaped the clutches of a pass rusher yet again.

No, Stoops wasn't one of the countless members of the Big Blue Nation whose imaginations were captured by the record-setting quarterback. It didn't him long after his arrival at Kentucky to figure out why the Hefty Lefty is so loved to this day.

"He's a beloved player here and rightfully so," Stoops said. "I think because any player, you're going to have respect for if they go out there and lay it on the line for your team week in and week out."

Nobody did that like Lorenzen.

For four years, the UK Athletics Hall of Famer poured everything he had into every play of his 41 college starts. He set six NCAA records, four SEC records and 11 school records for passing and total offense in that time, but numbers fail to capture who he was and what he meant.

"I think any time you go back and watch any of his film and see the things that he's done, and trying to put the weight of the team on his shoulders and running it, passing, spinning around, tossing it, any which way to make plays for his team, it's hard not to admire that," Stoops said. "I think that's what everybody remembers."

Three months after his untimely death, that's still true. This week those remembrances will be extra poignant, as Kentucky will host Jared Lorenzen Day as the Wildcats (2-3, 0-3 Southeastern Conference) take on Arkansas (2-3, 0-2 SEC) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Kroger Field.

Jared didn't 'elude' pass rushers. They would just bounce off of him, and he would remain locked onto his receiver and deliver the strike.

He was voted "most difficult to tackle" at least 3 years he was here. He was just a hoss!

Choosing the Arkansas game to honor Jared is awesomely good: The Arkansas game was a shootout betweeen two AMAZING college quarterbacks. I think Jared ended up with 7 touchdown passes to take us into overtime. Late in the game, fans were leaving the stadium, because UK was down going into the 4th quarter. Jared turned to the stands and said "Y'all gonna miss it!". Those who left most certainly did!

Hope they can make my day there by winning it for Jarred. I picked them to win it before we lost our #1 QB.

If they do it will be great. Against a large crowd will be our losing ways and the cold temperature. I expect about 2/3 of the stadium to be full.

I am guessing it was 85-90% full. It sure surprised me. It was loud several times and the "22" white towels were waving several times. Another time everyone turned the lights on their cell phones and it lit up the place. I figured today everyone would be talking about what a great game it was. To me the only reason it would have been a great game was we won. Our QB and the 2 running backs had good rushing day sand the passing was not what we had earlier this season. The play calling was horrendous at times. First down on the 2 yard line and we kept trying to punch it thru the center of the line for no gain??? They knew we would try that and they were just waiting for us. Why no trickery play?? And the guy that tacled our player around the head should have bee a disqualification but it wasn't even called. I saw it when it happened from the opposite end of the field. I am 100% correct on my picks for the first 6 games (3-3). I have us losing to GA and MO, Beating TN and Vandy, and winning against UT Martin and Louisville for a 4-2 record in the second half. Overall 7-5. Not really confident with that but maybe we can win with the wildcat formation. We got to be careful not to get a lot of injuries against a "mad as a hornet" GA team next Saturday.

Not figuring in any upsets........WE will be 7-5 and 3-5 in the SEC. We win all 4 of our non conf games and beat Vandy down there and AR and MO at home. If we lose the AR and MO games we could end up 5-7, with a big step backward now that Stoops is assured of a future job here.

Bama, that is your post from Aug 20. So far, spot on.
