Kentucky wrapped up its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday afternoon, meaning separation should begin on the team’s depth chart. With the season now just 20 days away, The Cats’ Pause takes a look at which true freshmen could play for the Cats this season.
QB: Danny Clark and Walker Wood both enrolled in the spring, but Wood didn’t participate as he recovered from a torn meniscus. The head start, particularly for Clark, will help down the road, but as of now neither player will be needed this season. Stephen Johnson and Drew Barker are the clear 1-2 on the depth chart, with redshirt freshman Gunnar Hoak solidified as the No. 3 quarterback.
RB: Bryant Koback, another early enrollee who recovered from injury in the spring, was the only running back UK signed in the 2017 class. Koback hasn’t been full go yet, but offensive coordinator Eddie Gran said he’d be ready this week. Depth could be a concern behind sophomore running back Benny Snell. Sihiem King has limited game action, and though the coaches are excited about A.J. Rose, the difference he could make is still unknown. Getting through a complete season with three running backs seems unlikely, so Koback should see action when he’s healthy.
