UK’s recruitment of Kahlil Whitney was a bit of a whirlwind, with less than three weeks passing from the initial scholarship offer to the actual commitment. John Calipari got his first extended look at the Chicago native during the first evaluation period of July, and he immediately extended a scholarship offer and set Whitney up for his official visit to Lexington. Three days after that visit wrapped up, Whitney committed to the Cats over fellow finalists Georgetown, Illinois and Oregon. Kentucky is getting a high-upside wing with terrific athleticism, length and high-level competitiveness. He was one of the top scorers on the Nike circuit in his final summer of AAU play and has developed into a more-than-capable shooter from three-point range. “Kahlil Whitney has elite physical gifts,” 247Sports national analyst Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “He’s got the frame of a Greek god — wide, broad shoulders, long arms, and he’s already pretty strong. He’s a freakish athlete. So all the physical tools are there.”
“I think he’s on a unique level with his combination of athleticism and power. You’ve got a lot of guys who are fluid athletes — which he certainly is — but then he adds the power dynamic, which I don’t think many guys at the high school level have.” -Dave Boff, high school coach
