Tyrese Maxey’s big reclassification decision is coming soon, and the 5-star Class of 2019 point guard might’ve scooped himself on Friday night after a game here on the Nike AAU circuit.
He’s been talking to Kentucky commit Ashton Hagans — ranked No. 1 at the same position nationally, ahead of Maxey at No. 2 — about the possibility of both moving up a class and playing together this fall in Lexington. And how serious is that possibility?
“We call ourselves The Duo,” he said, pausing a beat before correction himself: “A possible duo. I’m sorry. Trying not to laugh.”
But he couldn’t help himself. He grinned as if he’d just let the cat out of the bag. That he’s leaning heavily toward picking the Wildcats is no surprise. He’s long raved about UK and its point guard whisperer of a head coach, John Calipari.
That he really might move up to the Class of 2018 and join an absolutely loaded backcourt in Lexington is an eyebrow-raiser, to say the least. If Hagans and Maxey both reclassify and join forces, Kentucky would have four former 5-star point guards on the roster; 2018 signee Immanuel Quickley and rising sophomore Quade Green are the others.
