I would like to see Kentucky get a shooting guard/ point guard senior transfer, every season.

If the freshmen get shaky in a game, put in the guy with experience

I have watched some video of this kid. He has a better shot than Travis especially from mid range to a few feet beyond the three point line. He is a better free throw shooter and has really good hands. He doesn’t get off the floor as well as Travis, but he is pretty scrappy and smart in the post. The one thing I noticed most, probably because we were so poor at it, is that he is a very good passer from the post to the perimeter. His court vision is very good and he seems to find the open shooters when they slide to open spots on the floor.

He is not an athlete. He will struggle on defense. I am not completely sure how his skills will transfer to a major conference, but I am cautiously optimistic.

Agree with all that. But he is better than nothing when you lose out on Vernon Carey, Anthony edwards, James Wiseman, Cole Anthony, Isiah Stewart, Jaden McDaniels and Matthew Hurt, just to name a few of the top 10. [Confused]

Cal hasn't been getting the big name recruits like he did when first started coaching the Cats.

Maybe the kids are catching on to a couple of things. First, Cal doesn't really develop players, in my opinion. Especially big men. I think the bigs he has gotten were as good the first day they stepped on campus as they were the last. Cal just gets kids to play together, not necessarily improving their skill level. Second, if you're good enough, you'll get drafted no matter what college you attend.

Am I misinterpreting some of these posts, or are some of you hedging on your support for Cal. I personally think he is doing a bang-up job and wouldn't swap him for any coach out there. Maybe just Monday morning quarterback talk. Carry on.

I always thought the same thing. If Cal was an average recruiter, he would be just an average coach anywhere else. Also, I always thought that if he would just let his players play to their strengths instead of micro-managing, they would be much more explosive IMO.

Paulcat,

I beg to differ. I think Cal (and his staff) has been spectacular at developing players. For guards, look no further than Shai last year, or even Hagans this year, who showed considerable improvement until he hit a slump at the end of the season. Herro was darn good coming in, but I think his defense has improved dramatically.

For big men, look at how KAT developed over the course of his year here. And while he took two years, PJ is radically improved over when he arrived. There are numerous examples of big men developing under Cal's coaching.

As to recruiting, it dropped off precipitously after Orlando left. He was the ace in the hole for Cal's early recruiting success. Sure wish he could come back.

I believe Townes, Shai and Herro all had skills and Cal was responsible for putting them in a position to utilize those skills. I'll give him that. But look at Nick Richards - he's been here two years and still doesn't know how to effectively post up a defender and get a decent shot off against him. Same goes for Noel, Skal, Killeya-Jones, and so far, EJ.

I will say that I think part of the reason is that Cal wants ALL of his players to be dribble-drivers. Even those who never will be. And to me, that's the problem.

As a former teacher, I can tell you that not every student will learn, no matter what you do. But a good teacher will take each student as far as that student is willing to go. That is as true of basketball as it is of physics.

I see evidence that where the student is willing to learn, Cal and his staff have proven themselves as great teachers.

I have always believed Cal does 3 things great: Recruit, get teams to play together, and develop players abilities. On the flip side I have never thought Cal was a great game coach, going back to his days at Memphis. I don't think he makes adjustments very well, or refuses to, and I don't think we always have great offensive schemes. He has also said himself that they don't watch film of other teams, they worry about what they need to do. That has also shown up, especially in the 2015 semi against Wisconsin. Wisconsin said they had watched 7 games on UK, and Cal said they had not watched any of UW. It definitely showed in the game as far as being prepared for what the other team does. Defensively I think he does a very good job, but offensively he basically relies on his guys just being better, which has said himself when he got to Kentucky. Since he has been at Memphis and UK he counts on getting the best talent to have a chance to win it all. If he doesn't have the top talent we will continue to fall short, especially with lack of experienced guards. I don't want anybody else since he handles everything that comes with this job very well, but I am saying he isn't the greatest game coach. I believe the same about K and Roy. All you have to do is watch some of their games. Zion only getting 1 shot in the last 6 minutes of their loss is one glaring example, and then watching Roy not post Cam Johnson up on Goldwire when they played Duke is another example. He did it once and scored, and they never ran the play again. They all recruit good, and they can develop players. The recruiting is the biggest piece.

Tubby was a great game coach, but couldn't recruit his own mother.

When Calipari's system works the best, with the one and dones, is when he has a super quick shot blocker to make up for the freshman who get schooled on drives to the basket.

If the Jamaican kid can get quicker, he could play that role, next season. So far, he hasn't proven to be that player.

I disagree on ur statement Paul "Second, if you're good enough, you'll get drafted no matter what college you attend."

______________________________________________

Several players get in the 1st round of the NBA because they play at Ky that would not normally get there then.

Jorts comes to mind even Humphey who just got a 10 day contracdt… Lamp - Teague -- D Johnson - Orton - maybe even Ska heck Booker became a lottery pick after going to Ky so did Murry - Tyler Utlis (guarantee 2nd rd money) and the list goes on. All improved their stock by going to ky - if they all had played elsewhere I doubt hardly any would have been drafted especially in the 1st round...just
my opinion,,

Secondly Cal is a great motivator with many different egos whereas they will play together for the team and not very many coaches can do that with athletics of the caliber that come to Ky.

I do hate his in game coaching especially in the last 5 min "grind it out" mentally without the "guards" or anyone who can really shoot the ball..and of course he rarely has an out of bounds play under his own basket that he trys (he did one lately and it worked). Heck my High School team have OOB plays that work!!

Jorts and Lamb were both mid 2nd round draft picks.

Humphries was undrafted.

Orton went late first round because he was 6'10", 255 pounds and a former 5-star HS player.

Booker was a lottery pick after averaging 21 minutes and ten points per game at UK. If he would've gone to a lesser school where he would've gotten 35 minutes a game he would've averaged 20+ points and probably gone top 5. If anything, I think going to UK hurt him (if you can call being drafted #15 getting hurt). Makes me think of Trae Young at Oklahoma. [Smile]

not my point they went "higher" or "because" the word "ky" on their chest made them more marketable than if it said say "Tulane or Georgia" as Ky gives them instant credibility . Orton averaged maybe 2 points a game maybe for example...1st round or 2nd round the two mentioned both went again because of ky on their chests.

I also know the story of Humphries ----he was a nobody but playing with ky allowed someone to take a chance on him/..

If ur point is u know more than me ok maybe u do but I also imv know why some ky players get drafted period!

(tae young is in the nba as we know)

Is this referring to Jorts and Lamb? Jorts was 6'10" with a nice outside shot and good offense inside. That's probably why he got drafted. Lamb was a 40+% 3-point shooter. I would bet good money they still would've been 2nd round draft picks even if they had gone to Georgia.
