Maintain composure

The word of the week for Mark Stoops was “rat trapping.” The term, which Stoops credits to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, was coined to describe players’ tendency to revert to bad habits when adversity hits.

“When things go wrong, we have guys that start rat trapping, doing some things that are inexcusable,” Stoops said. “And that’s gotta stop. That’s a losing mentality that we will not tolerate.”

Find more depth on defense

UK coaches were unwilling to play unproven backups on defense as Southern Miss mounted its comeback in the opener, but in what is likely to be a hot and muggy environment in Gainesville the Wildcats will need to rotate players to have any chance of a win.

“We’re working to solve the problem,” defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot said. “We need to get more players on the field. We need to get more guys in the rotation.”

Slow the run

Kentucky ranked 117th of 127 teams in rushing defense in week one, surrendering 262 rushing yards to Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles’ 68 rushing attempts against Kentucky were more than all but two teams in the country.

With Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio making just his second career start, expect the Gators to rely heavily on the run game until Kentucky can prove capable of stopping it. Florida totaled just 107 rushing yards in the opener but has multiple options at the position that could trouble Kentucky’s porous defense. Sophomore Jordan Scarlett led the way in Florida’s opener with 70 yards on 13 carries.

If we have any chance of winning we have to stop the run.

Scarlett and Thompson are their best runners averaging 5.4 and 3.7 yards per carry.

We have to contain them and not let them get to the outside.

Well, looks like the streak will finally end. 18 straight years of winning our 2nd game will come to an end. Embarrassing football 😡
