After intercepting his first career pass and scampering 20 yards for a touchdown, Kentucky safety Mike Edwards has been tabbed Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Edwards, a 6-foot-2 product of Cincinnati’s Winton Woods High School, made his fourth consecutive start on Saturday in a win over Charlotte. He had three tackles and in the fourth quarter intercepted a pass and raced 20 yards to give UK a 48-point lead.
On the year, Edwards has 33 tackles, including two tackles for a loss, breaking up a pair of passes and forcing a fumble.
Edwards joins Chris Westry as UK secondary stalwarts to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors in 2015. Westry, a 6-foot-4 cornerback, was honored after a key interception and pass break-up in a win over the Gamecocks to open league play.
