He took a round about way to get to Kentucky but he made it.

At first, Calvin Taylor thought he would play college basketball. Then he figured he was going to Temple to play college football.

Instead, he chose to play football at Kentucky and was a recent late signee for coach Mark Stoops’ 2015 recruiting class.

“I didn’t start playing football until my sophomore year,” said the 6-9, 287-pound Taylor, who is from Georgia. “I always thought I would be a college basketball player, but it turned out different.

“It was a crazy situation. I thought I was going to Temple and then when signing day was coming they had a coaching change and things got lost. It was just a weird situation.”

A community college coach contacted Taylor to ask if he had signed a scholarship. The coach happened to be friends with UK defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh and that night Brumbaugh called Taylor.

“I explained to him how I was kind of under the radar. The next day he called back and said to send him some of my basketball film,” Taylor, who won a state championship in both football and basketball in Georgia. “He said I could really move and to stay with him because the process was ongoing. He brough me up on an official visit and it was a done deal from there.

“I actually thought the first coach was just blowing smoke at me and then when coach Brumbaugh called, I thought, ‘This is real.’ It turned out to be a dream come true because Kentucky is better than any school that was recruiting me.”

He didn’t tell many people about his decision to go to Kentucky.

“I think I surprised everybody,” Taylor laughed and said. “I didn’t even tweet that I went on an official visit. Then after the visit, I tweeted that I committed to Kentucky. It was quite a surprise, even to my friends.”

Hopefully Taylor will bring some size and strength to the defensive line,
