Our defense gave up over 500 yards and that has to get better if we expect to win more SEC games.

Alvin “Bud” Dupree had no doubt Kentucky would bounce back from a disappointing 41-3 loss at LSU. The Wildcats gave top-ranked Mississippi State all it could handle before the Bulldogs pulled way for a 45-31 victory Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.

“We just had to make sure (the loss to LSU) was water under the bridge,” Dupree said. “We couldn’t think about it, even though we got blown out by LSU. We went out with the mentality that we wanted to win and had a chance to win.”

Despite the team’s bounce back from the blowout loss to the Tigers, the Wildcats gave up 542 yards against the unbeaten Bulldogs, with 326 coming on the ground and 216 through the air. Dupree said the lack of “making plays” throughout the game made it difficult for the defense.

“It’s real frustrating,” Dupree said. “We had a lot of chances to make plays on defense and score on offense. Sometimes we just got carried away.”

Dupree did his part to keep Mississippi State rattled and led the Wildcats with 10 tackles. Dupree had a sack for a loss of one yard and had 1.5 tackles for minus three yards. Dupree kept pressure on Bulldogs standout signal caller Dak Prescott and recorded two quarterback hurries.

Despite his performance, Kentucky struggled to stop Mississippi State’s running attack, which finished with 349 yards rushing, led by running back Josh Robinson, who rushed for 198 yards and scored two touchdowns. Prescott, a duel threat, added 88 yards and two scores. Prescott threw for 216 yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky had several missed tackles, leading to big gains, including a 73-yard touchdown run by Robinson in the third quarter.
