It may take some more time but we are getting better and if we can keep recruiting like we have been it won't be long before we are competitive even with the better SEC teams.

When Marcus Spears was a defensive end at LSU (2001-04), he and the rest of his Tigers team thought that Kentucky was a guaranteed W. Now, Spears, after a nine-year career in the NFL, has evolved into a host for SEC Nation, the SEC Network’s show broadcasting from Lexington this weekend before the Wildcats’ tilt with No.1-ranked Mississippi State.

And Kentucky has done some evolving of its own since those days of being a perennial doormat.

“Honestly we didn’t think much of Kentucky,” Spears said on Friday, after taping segments for SEC Nation at the purple lot on Alumni Drive and College Way in Lexington.

“We thought this was a win on the schedule. I don’t get paid to be nice to everybody. That was the mentality. I don’t think now you can come into this stadium and think that you’re going to win a game if you don’t play well.”

Spears’ co-host on SEC Nation, Joe Tessitore, also spoke to how much Kentucky has evolved in terms of perception around the league.

“I spent a lot of time with Mark Stoops over the course of this past spring and you could see where the program was headed and that things were turning the corner with recruiting and coaching,” Tessitore said after Friday’s tapings. “I think he’s got two of the best coordinators in college football. So it doesn’t surprise me that they’ve made their mark early on. I think it’s only going to get better and better as the years go on.”

Tessitore, Spears and their other co-host, former Florida Gator Tim Tebow, all agreed that the Wildcats were putting players on the field who were capable of competing in the SEC. Tessitore mentioned speed as the one quality that stood out to him about Kentucky’s team this year.
