That is one heck of a accomplishment that you see very seldom. It shows too that the coaching staff gives all the players a chance to play no matter if they are on scholarship or not. This is something he will remember his whole life and who knows he may get to be a starter.

Cole Mosier hadn’t played football on anything but a practice field since his senior year of high school in 2012-13. But that changed for the walk-on offensive guard on Saturday, when he got the start at left guard, logging his first collegiate minutes.

Starting left guard Zach West missed Saturday’s game against Ohio due to an injury to his neck that head coach Mark Stoops’ described as a “strange issue” involving fluid and possible nerve damage.

That left Mosier, his back-up who had never played in a collegiate game, to take his place.

“I was a little nervous,” he said. “But more anxious than nervous. … I haven’t played in a game in a year so it’s taking a little time for me to get back.”

The Walton-Verona High School product from Walton, Ky., redshirted last year after accepting a preferred walk-on status from Kentucky offensive line coach John Schlarman. Mosier had offers from several NAIA schools, but instead wanted to play football at a higher level.

And he got his chance on Saturday.

“I can improve but I played good for my first game, I feel like,” he said.
