I hope he is as good as his stats show but some of them may be because if the competition. If he is as good as advertised we are going to have one special player.

Zy’aire Hughes is such a gifted athlete that college football coaches are not certain where he’ll play in college — only that he can play a lot of spots.

The McCracken County junior gave his verbal commitment to Kentucky Saturday and is one of the key in-state targets for UK in the 2016 recruiting class. He plays quarterback at McCracken County (he played his first year at Lone Oak before the schools consolidated last year) but is expected to be a receiver or defensive back at UK.

How special is he? McCracken offensive coordinator Allen Harmon remembers going to UK’s 2013 Blue Lights summer camp and the team was late arriving due to bus trouble and traffic.

“Zy-Aire literally got off the bus, stretched a little and ran the fastest 40 (yard dash) time in all the camps UK had last year,” Harmon said.

He was laser-timed in 4.42 seconds then and Harmon said he continues to work to improve his strength and speed.

“He had a good winter in the weight room and is weighing about 190 pounds now,” Harmon said. “He’s going to be special over the next couple of years. He’s only going to get stronger and things like that.”

He already is.

Hughes completed 172 of 294 passes for 2,446 yards and 23 scores last year with eight interceptions and ran 116 times for 634 yards and 16 scores. As a freshman at Lone Oak, he was 81 of 130 passing for 1,253 yards and 14 scores and ran 61 times for 390 yards and nine scores. That’s 1,024 yards rushing and 25 scores in two seasons and 3,699 yards passing and 37 scores in two seasons.

“He took over at quarterback at Lone Oak when our starter got injured and has been there ever since,” Harmon said. “As a freshman at Lone Oak, he only played cornerback for three games and led us in interceptions.

“He’s a great kid, too. He is really a good leader for us. Even as a freshman he had that presence where kids followed him. He’s a tremendous, dynamic athlete. Athletic-wise, you can put him anywhere and he can play. We’re just glad to have him for two more years.”
