Is there a team left in the tourney that's ever won the title before?
Kansas State has played for a championship before, I think KY beat them in the late 40's or early 50's. ZI wasn't sure if they had ever won it though. I also know that Houston lost to NC St. in '83 but didn't think they won the title either.

UCONN has won it 3 or 4 times. I think 4.
-------------------- Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

Others in the final game, but lost: UK over Kansas State 1951
Georgetown over Houston 1983 NCSt over Houston 1984
Baylor over Zags 2021 UNC over Zags 2017 [ 03-25-2023, 08:36 AM: Message edited by: jerseycat ]

Yeah, I realized, after the fact, that UCONN had won a couple of titles!

Found the answer fairly quickly. It's happened twice. 1985 Villinova upset Georgetown and in 1988 Kansas upset Oklahoma. The underdogs were pretty good teams.

Really don't care either. Hope it is a real underdog this year.
Heard a podcast today comparing UK and K-State after the loss. They went off about how the K-State coach built a great team, with "more dudes" (i.e., more good players), and better flexibility than UK had. Of course, their PG was superior to anything we had, but overall, they had mo' better players.
They also went on a rant about how UK was a team that would do well in the regular season (hmmmm.... maybe), but not in the tournament where every coach, for six straight games, will be looking to exploit our weaknesses. And our primary weakness was Tshiebwe on the ball screen. Especially what both Bama and K-state did, which is to go 5-out, and pull Tshiebwe onto the side-court ball-screen. His inability to make good decisions was glaringly obvious.
I really like Tshiebwe. He is a true beast. But he has been our primary defensive liability all season long. Teams just exploited the heck out of him. If he decides he wants to come back, Cal has to teach him how to defend, or tell him no.

And Cal didn't do anything to try to hide that defensive weakness. I don't count playing drop defense as an adjustment. Zone would have helped hide Oscar but he never wanted to do it for some stupid reason.

For some reason, I thought there was a big ten matchup once between IU and a Michigan team!

The matchups between the Big East and Big 8 were the only ones listed.
