Topic: NCAA considering a release of 68-team bracket

March Madness may not take place in the coming weeks, but the NCAA is still considering an official release of the 68-team bracket in the near future.
This afternoon, NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt told CBS Sports that a release of the official bracket, though far from a guarantee, could still be on the table. In short, there are obvious logistical hurdles, but it’s something they will “continue to look at.”
“We’re hearing today there’s interest from coaches and athletic directors from that,” Gavitt said. “I wouldn’t say we’ve shut down the idea completely, but there is, practically speaking, it’s a bit challenging at this moment. … There’s pluses and minuses to any decision. If you put the field together, you could have teams, depending on that conference’s policy, would not be the most obvious choice as the [automatic qualifier]. It’s something we’re going to continue to look at. This has been so fast, so emotional, we’ll continue to think on it a little bit.”
Despite the games not being played, the bracket release would be seen as a way to celebrate the achievements and overall successes of the teams originally set to make the now-canceled NCAA Tournament field. Even if they can’t play, Gavitt knows teams would likely want to know their status as a tournament team, seeding, and the path they would have had to take.
“I understand both perspectives, first and foremost for the student-athletes knowing definitively where you are as an NCAA Tournament team, or a No. 1 seed,” Gavitt said. “Not based on other bracketologists, but based on the selection committee’s decision. That’s a big deal. It’s what they all play for and to have the kind of recognition and honor that comes with it.”
According to the report by CBS Sports, the selection committee had submitted their initial ballots and had 31 at-large teams chosen and 13 automatic qualifiers, with many of the at-large bids potentially taking automatic qualifying spots at the conclusion of the conference tournaments.
With the dust settling a bit following the NCAA’s historic decision to cancel the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, Gavitt acknowledged that decision-makers could put together the final field in coming days and release the ever-popular bracket. Whether the bracket release would be televised or simply unveiled through the NCAA’s communication office, though, is unknown.

I seen where they were considering giving seniors one more of eligebility for spring leagues and possibly for bb also.

Maybe I'm alone on this, but the idea of doing this is absolutely of the wall. Not to mention how do you even do this without knowing the automatics? And I thought conference tournament records played some part of the selection committee's discussions. NCAA has more important things to "continue to look at".

I think it's just silly. It runs in thee same vein as the earlier crock-o-crap, talking about just declaring Kansas champion.

Stupidity in my humble opinion... there are always upsets in conference tournaments that raise and lower different teams … no way they can get a bracket right. That means they leave someone off the bracket that might have made it. There is no reason for a made up bracket.
