Brett and I were on campus for much of the same time... and I lived next-door to Wildcat lodge, and had most of my meals in the same cafeteria that the players used. I saw him around quite often.
Brett never quite bloomed or reached his basketball potential, but he was a great guy who found a real calling trying to offer financial guidance to NBA players. Too bad some other UK players did not seek out his services (I'm looking at YOU, Antoine Walker!).
Rest in peace. I pray for the family he left behind.

In his 4 season with the Cats Bret was a McDonalds all-American played in 114 games, scored 410 points and 308 rebounds.

Thinking about the unfulfilled potential that Bearup had made me think of Richards. Like Bearup, he is clearly a talented player, but when he gets on the court, not-so-good things happen. I hope it was just a one-year thing, and he returns to be a great center for us, but he could be our version of Bearup.
Time will tell.
