The latest will be Hamidou Diallo, who just announced he’s leaving for the NBA Draft. Despite a subpar season that saw him score under 10 points 16 times in his last 20 games, Diallo is still projected to be a second-round pick in this year’s draft.

Not long after Diallo announced his intentions, Calipari released a statement about the decision.

“I remember going through this process with Hami last year,” Calipari said. “In both cases, our conversations were about what was best for Hami. Last year, he wanted to come back to put on that Kentucky jersey in a game for the first time, compete for a championship and improve his game. He did all three this season.

“Hami got better in all areas of his game. True growth happens when you get knocked down to the point of questioning yourself. We already knew how talented of a player Hami was physically and athletically, but we all learned about Hami’s toughness, his character and his desire to win.

“I am so proud of his growth from beginning to end. He’s prepared to succeed and will succeed. He’s the best athlete in the draft who’s continued to improve his shooting.”

I don't often disagree with Coach Cal but I do when it comes to Hami. I think his game spiraled downward as the season went along and that he was a distraction who did very little to help either his game or our Ky basketball team as the season went along. I do hope he can fulfill his desire to play in the NBA but fear he will end up going overseas to play somewhere. I think we all thought he would be a great team leader for this young group of young men but he turned out to be anything but that. He certainly has the athleticism for the NBA but I fear he does not have the tools necessary to succeed at that level and certainly hope that my opinions are wrong, For his Sake.

SCWC, I agree. I was very disappointed in Hami. IMO, he never came close to living up to his potential.

Hami had one impressive game all year. I felt the team had less of a chance at winning when he was in the game. I have nothing against him as a person, but I won’t lose sleep with him declaring for the draft. Good luck, Hami! I hope you succeed in the NBA.

Actually, I think he will succeed in the NBA. The potential is there with all the athleticism he has. I expect him to "blossom".

I think Hami will do well in the league. Also, don't understand why some of the fans dislike him so much. I don't get it. Almost like he was elected fair and square to be at Kentucky but he is not fit to be a wildcat. What the hell?

Hami started off this season as arguably our best player. As the season progressed, with the emergence of Knox and SGC, Diallo dropped off notably.

I'm the first to admit that I'm no expert but it's hard for me to believe that a role layer on a mediocre college team is going to be an NBA player. OK, maybe slightly better than a mediocre team.

I don't think it is dislike so much as that he just isn't the typical 5-star player we're accustomed to seeing in the Calipari era. Hami was an average college player, at best. His claim to fame is a very high vertical jump. Other than that, he doesn't have the basketball talent that of a 5-star recruit. He's barely a 4-star player, in my opinion.

Malik Monk could at least shoot the ball, and he didn't see the court until his team was out of the playoff picture and decided to sit their starters. I don't know what particular skill will lead to Hami getting playing time in the NBA. He has no defense and he has no offense. What else is there?

I certainly do not dislike Hami personally, my opinion was merely that of his basketball skills and the way he played for us at UK. I wish him nothing but the best as he leaves our program.

I liked hami, and wish him well. Hope he gets drafted. He can shoot as evidence in the buffalo and West Virginia games. I believe he like a lot of players that play for coach cal get gun shy, miss a shot and get benched. We all know that's coach Carl's philosophy. You may say you disagree but it's the truth, unless you're that one or two player's on the team that can't do no wrong.

The stats don't lie and Diallo a shooting guard who's stats for the season are:

42.8% from the field, only shooting percentage worse on the team was Vanderbilt's at 42.6%.

23.8% from the 3 point line, only percentage worse was Brad Calipari's 14.3%.

61.6% from the f/t line, only percentage worse was Washington's 60.6% and Killeya-Jones 56.4%.

It "may" happen but it's awfully hard to believe that a NBA team will take a early draft pick with shooting stats like Diallo's.
