Hamidou Diallo’s future should become much clearer and Kentucky basketball’s 2017-18 roster more settled after the NBA combine in Chicago this week. Over the next few days, Diallo will be measured, tested and interviewed, after which he should have a better idea where he stands as a 2017 draft prospect and whether he should return to college.
SEC Country spoke with multiple NBA scouts ahead of the combine and it’s safe to say teams are both intrigued by and leery of the 18-year-old former 5-star recruit. Diallo enrolled at Kentucky in January, sat out the second half of the season despite being eligible to play and then backed out of 5-on-5 scrimmaging at the combine.
“Right now, he’s a D-League player,” said one scout, referring to the NBA’s minor league, “but someone who is so interesting as a prospect that, if you have multiple first-round picks or an early second, he would be great to invest in. It just comes down to the right team having to come through — someone with a D-League team, the perfect situation, maybe a playoff team that can let him develop — otherwise, it’s probably in his best interest to come back and work on his shooting and get bigger and stronger.”
