Lyles isn't going to play like a freshman that's for sure.

When John Calipari watches freshman Trey Lyles play, he likes the “dog in him” and what it adds to the team.

“The biggest thing we saw with him is he’s got some of that dog in him like he’s bringing it. Like if you came at him, he’s not moving. So when you come at him the next time, he’s in the same place,” said the Kentucky coach. “When he comes at you, he’s coming at you, and you’re going to know he came at you.

“The biggest thing though is his skill set. He’s really a smooth player who can shoot. And he’s 6-10, so playing him at the three is not like people say you can’t play him. No, if you watch, he can easily play the position. Now guarding the position, maybe he guards the four. We’re just trying to figure all that out.”

Lyles, Indiana’s Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year last season after leading Arsenal Tech to the state championship, laughs when asked about the “dog in him” that Calipari likes.

“Just shows that he sees that I play hard and don’t back down from competition,” Lyles, a three-time All-State performer who averaged 23.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last year.

That’s why he was not overly concerned about Kentucky being ranked No. 1 in the preseason coaches’ poll.

“You could care less. Rankings do not mean nothing. We have to go show it and hopefully during the season we can do that,” Lyles, who finished as his school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder while earning McDonald’s All-American honors, said.
